Earth could take no more. We did not heed its’ cry. We fell out of tune. Nature wants us to survive but how many worlds will it take for us to see we must change our direction? We forgot our responsibility. Will we choose to resonate with our surroundings? Will we care to listen?

"Starting this project came from a desire I had to bring together musicians from around the UK, many who had never played together before, in the attempt to create something communal and uplifting through our joint love for sharing and creating. People from many different artistic and musical backgrounds came together, offering us their emotional insights of planet Earth and beyond, through each individual’s musical expression and lovingness to work together. The composition itself played a small part in the experience compared with the combined spirit of all involved, the coming together to conjure a unified creation in what was mostly an improvised performance. These performers came together so willingly, some traveling a long way in order to be part of such a project and I shall be forever grateful for that.
There are five sections to the composition. Some sections featured some pre-written melodies that I would cue as the piece meandered through, other sections featured some prescribed ideas in terms of textures, words, and feelings for various parts, however these were merely suggestions, not orders. It was my hope that people, whilst performing the composition, could be themselves and feel free to express whatever they wished at any given point without feeling too shoe-horned by the presence of conduction. The composition itself was not to be a limitation but a springboard into whatever direction the performers themselves wanted to go.
‘Sound-Painting’ techniques, created by Walter Thompson in the 70s, (a type of musical sign-language with hand signals corresponding to sonic projections in this instance) were used throughout the piece, as well as some other signals that I would create on the spot and allow the performers to play their interpretations from the movement. Much inspiration for the composition came about from Lectures by Sun Ra, interviews with Octavia Butler, albums by Alan Silva’s Celestial Communications Orchestra as well as general musings of space travel and possible coexistence with nature that I have written down over the last few years.
Ancient Infinity Orchestra is a 9-piece band based in Leeds, all members were involved in the performance of this piece. As I have been writing music for this band for the last few years, the creative process of composing this piece felt like an extension of Ancient Infinity Orchestra, hence the name Ancient Infinity Orchestra’s Cosmosaic, a bringing together of many individuals to form a bigger cohesive picture.
Having heard Mark Sanders play alongside other musicians such as Roscoe Mitchell, Charles Gayle, Wadada Leo Smith, Evan Parker, John Edwards (to name a few), it was such a privilege that we were able to play music with such an experienced and nurturing character, so thank you, Mark! To Eamon Foreman and Charlotte Keeffe, who also traveled a long way to be with us on the day, I am so grateful for your efforts to be involved in the project.
It was very important to me that this project was released on the Polyscope label because I am fully behind their ethics and enthusiasm for supporting musicians' free reign of creativity.
This recording marked the beginning of Ancient Infinity Orchestra’s Cosmosaic. The vision for the future of this project is to perform this piece, together with visual effects, and dancers in venues to live audiences. I would like to create new compositions addressing other matters that I hope will ultimately further develop a feeling of togetherness between all people and our connection with the environment around us, for the good of ALL life. The Universe is a big place and it’s not just about us…"
